TJHS Spring 2018 Update

As I sit here and reflect on this school year, it makes me a firm believer in the phrase that days go slow and years go fast.  It seems like yesterday that we began planning for this school year.  It is hard to believe that we have about two weeks of school remaining.  As a reminder, our last day for students this year will be Thursday, May 31st.  As we do at the end of each quarter, we will release students at 1:40pm on that day.

Our Spring sports season came to a close with the TJHS Girls Track Team bringing home the GWOC North Championship hardware!  We also had 6 girls compete at the OHSAA 7th and 8th Track & Field State Championship in Lancaster, OH.  Not only did they qualify in the top 16 in the state to be able to compete in this meet, but all 6 finished in the top 8 and made the podium! Congrats to the 4x200m relay team of Hannah Falknor, Leah Harnish, Catie O'Neill, and Kaylee King on a 5th place finish and new school record!  Congrats to Emma Kennett on a 5th place finish and new school record in the 800m!  Congrats to Sophie Fong on a 4th place finish and new school record in the pole vault!  Three new school records...WOW!!

Recently, our Archery Team qualified and competed at the National competition in Louisville, KY.  The team had to qualify for Nationals from the state competition...OUTSTANDING!!

TJHS has 4 students headed to Atlanta, GA in early June to compete in the National History Bee and US Geography Olympiad.  Congrats to Margaret Snee, Ryan Martz, and Ethan Martin, who qualified for the National History Bee!  Congrats to Nathan Mamitog, who qualified for the US Geography Olympiad!  TJHS had 4 students qualify to compete in these National academic competitions...AWESOME!!

There are many excellent learning activities taking place as we look forward to having a strong finish to another excellent school year at TJHS.  I encourage our students to approach the next two weeks with the same level of academic enthusiasm as they have throughout this school year.

TJHS Winter Update 2017-2018

Troy City Schools
Now that the 1st Semester has come to a close and January is behind us, we have the opportunity to look ahead at the second half of the school year.  TJHS teachers and staff continue to provide a quality education to the students of this building.  We celebrated our successes during our Second Quarter Academic Awards Assembly by distributing more than 400 certificates to students for Honor Roll (3.5-3.74), Principal's List (3.75-4.0), and Perfect Attendance.  With a new Semester in full swing, I want to provide a snapshot of upcoming events over the next couple of months.  Please note the dates for our state testing in March, April, and May.  We will test in the morning on these days.

Unfortunately, our upcoming state testing schedule combined with Spring break creates a conflict with our Third Quarter Academic Awards Assembly.  In lieu of an awards assembly, we will distribute Third Quarter awards to students through their advisory teachers.  We know that our students work very hard to earn these awards and we want to make sure they still receive their certificates even though we are unable to hold the assembly.

Feb. 19 - NO SCHOOL - Presidents' Day
Feb. 22 - Conferences - 3:00-6:00PM
Mar. 16 - End of 3rd Quarter
Mar. 26 and 28 - Language Arts State Testing Grades 8
Mar. 27 and 29 - Language Arts State Testing Grade 7
Mar. 30 - Apr. 6 - NO SCHOOL - Spring Break and Good Friday
Apr. 23 and 25 - Math State Testing Grades 8
Apr. 24 and 26 - Math State Testing Grade 7
May 1-2 - Science State Testing Grade 8

I also want to share a resource to help you as parents deal with the topic of mental health.  Hopefully you find this article helpful as you navigate the sometimes challenging path of parenting.

Thank you for your continued support of TJHS.  Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about your child's education.  It is our supportive families, excellent staff, and diligent students that make TJHS a great place to work and learn.

TJHS Fall 2017 Update

Image may contain: sky, cloud, basketball court and outdoor

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches tomorrow, it is a great time to stop and reflect on the numerous positive things that are happening here at TJHS.  As you will see below, we have a lot to be thankful for at TJHS.

Once again, we had a high number of students participate in fall sports.  Three of our fall teams finished in FIRST place in the GWOC North Division, with two other teams finishing as GWOC North Runner-Ups.  Our 8th Grade Volleyball team, Boys Cross Country team, and Girls Cross Country team all finished the season as the GWOC North Champions!  Our 7th Grade Volleyball team and 7th Grade Football team both finished as GWOC North Runner-Ups!  Our Girls CC team won all but 2 meets this year, winning not only the GWOC North title, but also the overall GWOC title.  They finished an overall 153-3.  Wow!  Emma Kennett became the school record holder by running a time of 11:54 at the Miami County Championships!!  All of this while many of our student-athletes were recognized as "Scholar Athletes" (3.5 GPA or higher)!  What a successful fall season for our student-athletes...Congratulations!!
One note from athletics is the caution to our parents and athletes about participating on non-school teams when not permitted to do so by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.  Please see the note below from the OHSAA regarding football.  There are similar regulations for other sports.  When in doubt, ask your school coach or Mrs. Roberts, TJHS Athletic Director.
7.4) Regulations Prohibiting Football Players from Participating on Non-School Teams –

7.4.1) A member of an interscholastic football team may not participate in an athletic contest, a tryout or any type of team or group training or practices with a non-school team in that same sport between August 1 and May 31. Flag football, touch football and arena football are examples of non-permissible events.

Note: This regulation applies to students invited to participate in a tryout, group training or practice at a college or in contests, tryouts, group training or practices with any non-school program or team. (General Sports Regulation 7.2.1).

7.4.2) From June 1 to July 31, a member of an interscholastic football team may participate in an athletic contest, a tryout or any type of team or group training or practices with a non-school team. This would include 7-on-7 participation. (See General Sports Regulation 7.5 regarding coach’s involvement . . . the 10-day rule.)

Note: All activities must be non-contact and the only football equipment the player may wear are helmets and cleats.
Our 1st Quarter Academic Awards recognized students for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll (3.5-3.74 GPA), and Principal's List (3.75-4.0 GPA).  We handed out over 519 total awards, while having nearly 250 parents and family members join us for the awards!

Our fundraiser with Coffelt Candy Company was a success this year.  This will help us to increase access to mobile technology such as chromebooks.  The top 20 students were transported to lunch at Al's Pizza by our business partner, Erwin Chrysler Jeep Dodge.  A Dodge Viper and brand new Dodge Chargers were used to transport the students.  Erwin even picked up the tab for lunch.  Thank you Erwin Chrysler!

Student council again collected canned goods and held a "penny war"  to raise money toward helping local families during this Thanksgiving season.  The donations combined with the money from the "penny war" is providing 22 local families with a Thanksgiving meal and more.  Well done Student Council!

In the fall, our 8th grade students take trips that will help guide them as they begin to think about what they would like to do in high school and beyond.  One of the goals of TJHS is to provide our students with the necessary tools and experiences that will allow them to begin formulating realistic plans for the future before they walk across the parking lot to Troy High School.  The Future Begins Today will sponsor our 4th annual trip to Wright State University.  This will allow our 8th grade students to visit a local college campus, learn about the various programs of study, and interact with a representative from WSU to answer any questions.  Also, we took our annual trip to Upper Valley Career Center.  This trip allows our students to see the different programs offered at UVCC, and begin to think about whether or not this learning environment would be for them.

I hope this Fall Update finds you and your family well as we head into the upcoming Holidays.  Thank you for your continued support of TJHS.  This building is a great place to work and learn because of our excellent staff and supportive families.

TJHS Fall 2016 Update - Find the AWESOME!

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches this week, it is a great time to stop and reflect on the numerous positive things that are happening here at TJHS.  I know that I am thankful for a supportive school community, an excellent staff, and a student body who achieves at a very high level academically and athletically.  I have challenged the faculty and staff of TJHS this year to find the AWESOME in every day.  As you read below, there is a lot of AWESOME that can be easily identified.

Image result for thanksgivingOnce again, we had a high number of students participate in fall sports.  Three of our fall teams finished in FIRST place in the GWOC North Division, with another team making it to the semi finals in the GWOC tournament.  Our 8th Grade Football team (Three Way Tie with Piqua/Tipp), Boys Cross Country team, and Girls Cross Country team all finished the season as the GWOC North Champions!  Our 7th Grade Volleyball made it to the Semi Finals in the GWOC tournament, losing to eventual champ Springboro.  All of this while 71% of our student-athletes were recognized as "Scholar Athletes" (3.5 GPA or higher)!  What a successful fall season for our student-athletes...Congratulations!!  TJHS has successful athletic programs...now that is AWESOME!

Our 1st Quarter Academic Awards recognized students for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll (3.5-3.74 GPA), and Principal's List (3.75-4.0 GPA).  We handed out over 625 total awards, while having 166 parents and family members join us for the awards!  The dedicated teachers and staff, hard-working students, and supportive families at TJHS are AWESOME!

Having Erwin Chrysler Jeep Dodge as a great business partner helping us have a successful fundraiser is AWESOME!

Student council again collected canned goods and held a "penny war"  to raise money toward helping local families during this Thanksgiving season.  More than 1500 total canned good items were needed in order for TJHS to reach its goal this year.  In total we collected over 3500 canned good items!  The donations combined with the money from the "penny war" is providing 30 local families with a Thanksgiving meal and more.  An active TJHS student council who leads the building in such meaningful and service oriented activities is AWESOME!

Recently, our 8th grade students had the opportunity to take trips that will help guide them as they begin to think about what they would like to do in high school and beyond.  One of the goals of TJHS is to provide our students with the necessary tools and experiences that will allow them to begin formulating realistic plans for the future before they walk across the parking lot to Troy High School.  The Future Begins Today sponsored our 3rd annual trip to Wright State University.  This allowed our 8th grade students to visit a local college campus, learn about the various programs of study, and interact with a representative from WSU to answer any questions.  Also, we took our annual trip to Upper Valley Career Center.  This trip allows our students to see the different programs offered at UVCC, and begin to think about whether or not this learning environment would be for them.  Living in a community who supports excellent learning activities that will help shape the future of our young men and women is AWESOME!

I hope this Fall Update finds you and your family well as we head into the upcoming Holidays.  Thank you for your continued support of TJHS.  This building is a great place to work and learn because of our excellent staff and supportive families.  Now that is AWESOME!!
