Happy New Year!

As 2012 comes to a close, we have the opportunity to look forward to 2013.  The first part of this school year was very successful.  TJHS teachers and staff continue to provide a quality education to the students of this building.  I often remark that this building is full of students that simply come to school and do what we ask of them.  This makes our job not only easier, but very enjoyable and rewarding to see the growth in the young men and women of TJHS.  With a new year approaching, I wanted to provide a snapshot of upcoming events at TJHS over the next couple of months:

January 11 - End of 2nd Quarter
January 21 - Grade Cards Go Home
January 24 - Parent/Teacher Conferences - 3:00-6:30PM
January 29 - 2nd Quarter Academic Awards Assembly
February 4-8 - Practice Ohio Achievement Assessments
February 4, 6, 8 - 8th Grade Trips by Teams to Upper Valley Career Center following OAAs
February 21 - Parent/Teacher Conferences - 3:00-6:00PM

I hope this holiday season has been merry and bright for you and your family.  In case you missed it, the staff at TJHS participated in an Ugly Sweater Day before the break.  Enjoy the picture below and Happy New Year!

TJHS is Thankful!

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, I found it appropriate to post about some of the many reasons that we at TJHS are thankful.

One of our very own, Mr. Clark Shigley, has been selected to receive the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce's prestigious Outstanding Educator Award.  Mr. Shigley is employed through the Upper Valley Career Center as the coordinator for the CBIP (Career-Based Intervention Program) for Troy Junior High School.  The CBIP works with students who have had difficulty with academics or attendance by providing them an opportunity to gain employment during the school day, along with receiving career counseling and their regular academics.  Mr. Shigley makes home visits when selecting students for enrollment in the program, as well as continuing the visits during the course of the program.  He works with students to help develop good work habits and responsibilities.  He assists the students in making improvements in their classroom grades, life long career goals, and good decision making.  Mr. Shigley meets regularly with the students and their employers to ensure that his students are successful at work. He has been an educator for twenty two years, the last twelve at TJHS in his current capacity.  We are thankful for the many great teachers at TJHS, including Mr. Shigley.

We recently held our 1st Quarter Academic Awards Assembly.  As a school, we recognized approximately 340 students for Honor Roll (GPA of 3.5 to 3.74) and Principal's List (GPA of 3.75-4.0) combined, as well as approximately 280 students for Perfect Attendance.  With many students receiving both an academic and an attendance award, we recognized approximately 445 of our 700 students!  Many parents and family members attended the assembly recognizing the achievements of these students.  We are thankful for so many supportive families and high achieving students at TJHS.

For our fundraiser this year, we partnered with Trophy Nut Company in Tipp City.  Our students went NUTS, so to speak, selling a great deal of Trophy Nut product.  As a result, we will be able to increase the student access to technology and assist the overall academic programming.  As a step in this direction, we recently were able to purchase two sets of SMART responders and 40 netbooks.  These will be used in classrooms to benefit instruction and learning in the 21st century.  Our business partner, Erwin Chrysler Dodge Jeep, paid for lunch for the top 20 sellers, as well as provided their time and vehicles to transport students to lunch at Al's Pizza...he even brought over his Dodge Viper!  We are thankful for the support of our community during our fundraiser and for great business partners, including Erwin.

Yesterday, our student council did what they do every year, they packed and arranged delivery of Thanksgiving baskets to 30 families right here in Troy.  With just a few days remaining we found ourselves short in filling the Thanksgiving baskets, so a One Call Now was made to the TJHS community.  The response was overwhelming.  Not only were we able to fill all 30 Thanksgiving baskets, but we had extra canned good items that were donated to a local shelter.  We are thankful for an active student council, who gives back to the community, and for the overwhelming response of our school community when called upon.

As you can see, TJHS has many great reasons to be thankful.  I hope you take time to reflect on the things that you have to be thankful for and have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

We've got Spirit!

Hello and welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year.  The year is off and running with classes in full swing.  I would like to highlight a new initiative in place this school year, the Spirit Advisory Competition.  Last year we began encouraging students to wear school colors to show their school spirit on Fridays.  The participating students were released to their lockers 1 minute early at the end of the day on Fridays.  This year we are ramping that up with a grade level Team challenge.  Each Friday during Advisory, teachers count the number of students who are dressed in school apparel and/or wearing school colors.  They then email the number of students participating out of the number of students present to Mr. Dilbone.

At this point the total is tallied for each of the teams.  The team with the highest percentage of participation wins the challenge and is announced on Monday morning.  The team leader from the winning team then sends a student to the office to retrieve the banner.  Below is a picture of one of the Troy Trojan banners that is presented to the winning team for the week.  There is one for 7th grade and one for 8th grade.  The teams display this in a prominent area for the week that they are the champions!  This challenge has become very competitive, and there has even been talk of "trades" among the teams!  Although there will be no trades, Fridays have been rather exciting mornings as the teams have taken great pride in attempting to bring home the banner each week.  Please help us to keep our school spirit alive and remind your student to wear their school colors on Friday!

We've got spirit...yes we do!!
Photo: And the 7th grade spirit winner for last week is...7-3! Congratulations on having 69% participation!! They are proudly displaying the Trojan banner in their team area.

Go Trojans!

August is here and the start of the 2012-2013 school year is quickly approaching.  I hope that each of you had a relaxing and restful summer.  Summer break can serve as a great opportunity to rejuvenate the mind and body.  The upcoming school year brings some exciting changes.  New to the Troy Junior High School staff this year include Mrs. Meredith Parris, 8th Grade Language Arts; Mr. Scott Dieringer, 7th Grade Math; Mrs. Katy Shipley, Administrative Assistant; and Mr. Randy Walters, School Psychologist.  Welcome to Troy Junior High School!

Summer Time!

It's official...summer has arrived and we have finished another successful year at Troy Junior High School!  I am very proud of the students and staff of this building.  Our successes throughout the year in academics, athletics, and the arts are due to our students and the quality people who have poured so much time and energy into everything that we do here at TJHS.

While the end of the year is always somewhat challenging to close out, we often experience much joy in putting the finishing touches on another successful year.  The end of this year saw many team related activities as well as the end of the year awards.  Our talent show on the last day could have rivaled the best JH talent shows in the state!  I could tell by the reaction that our faculty, staff, and student body were extremely impressed with all of the acts participating in the show.  The students displayed excellent behavior during both the awards assembly and the talent show on the last day.

We will miss the 8th grade students as they travel across the parking lot to the High School, but look forward to the incoming 7th graders.  Take the opportunity before you to rest, relax, and rejuvenate this summer.  We are already working on the details for the first school day on August 22.  Check the blog this summer for updates.  Take care and have a safe, enjoyable, and blessed summer!

Finish Strong

Life is very busy at TJHS and the year is quickly coming to a close.  I want to share some of our upcoming events as well as encourage everyone to finish strong.  Our state testing was last week with make-up testing this week.  We have testing for our 7th grade students with our Algebra readiness assessment coming up tomorrow.  Thursday evening is the next JH orchestra concert in the HS auditorium at 7:00PM.   Friday will bring the Health Fair that Mrs. Wilson is putting together.  Next week is teacher appreciation week...stop and thank a teacher!  The teachers at TJHS do an excellent job of providing a quality education to our students, and they deserve to be recognized for all that they do!  The JH large group music contest being held at Troy HS will bring the week to a close next week.  7th Grade Parent Orientation will be held on Thursday, May 17 at 6:00PM in the JH Cafeteria.  This should last about an hour.   Parents of current 6th grade students are encouraged to attend.  Hobby Day will be on May 18th.  There is a JH choir concert in the HS auditorium on May 22 at 7:00PM and a JH band concert at the same location on May 23 at 7:00PM.  Our Veterans Day program will be held the afternoon of May 25.  The last day of school is May 30...whew, I think that covers most of our events!  All of this and my wife is due with our third child any day!!  Needless to say, we have a lot going on right now.

With all of the important events coming up and the end of the school year quickly approaching, it is easy to get caught up in the business of things.  However, there are many positive things to celebrate at TJHS.  I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy serving as the principal of this building.  The quality staff, students, and families that make up TJHS have allowed for my first year here to be fantastic.  I have enjoyed getting to know many of our students and families, and I look forward to the bright future of TJHS and Troy City Schools.  Take these final weeks of school to reflect on the quality year that we have had, look forward to next year, and most of all...Finish Strong. Go Trojans!

Sincerely,

Spring and Testing Season at TJHS

It's official...Spring and Testing Season are upon us here at TJHS.  This morning as I worked in my office, the company who cares for our landscaping arrived. They are here to clean up and put down mulch in our shrub beds, 11 1/2 yards of mulch to be exact.  As I watched them meticulously spread the fresh dark mulch in our shrub beds near the main entrance, I thought about how much I enjoy Spring.  The freshly mowed grass, the flowering trees, the resurgence of the plants and all that is green...what a great time of year!  It reminds us of the often long and cold Winter (maybe not as cold this year) that we must endure in order to experience such a return to life.

My thoughts shifted to the upcoming Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAAs) and the Testing Season that we are in as well.  Much like the Spring season, the Testing season is an opportunity for our students and staff to shine.  At this time in the year they can demonstrate that they have put in the hours, sometimes long and sometimes difficult, necessary to continue to perform at a high level on the state tests.  The teachers and staff here work diligently throughout the year to provide a quality education to our students, instilling in them the skills necessary not only to be successful on the upcoming OAAs, but also in life.  April 23-27 will be the opportunity for our students to, much like Spring, once again shine, and I have every reason to believe that they will.  As I mentioned before, I have every reason to believe that our students will perform well on these tests.   However, please keep in mind that these are a snapshot of the performance of our students in the tested areas, useful as one of many reference points for the quality instruction provided at TJHS.

What can parents and families do to help their son or daughter prepare for the OAAs?  I'm glad you asked!  They can start by visiting this site, http://ohio3-8.success-ode-state-oh-us.info/.  This site tells what's expected of students, provides an opportunity to practice for the tests, and explains how to understand test results.  I also strongly encourage parents and families to communicate with your child's teachers.  The current tested areas are Reading and Math in 7th grade, along with Reading, Math, and Science in 8th grade.  Teachers in these subjects can share points of strength and weakness your child may have so that you can help them to better prepare for the upcoming tests.  I greatly appreciate your partnership as we finalize our preparations for these tests over the next two weeks.  I would also like to notify you of a change in our schedule, with an extended advisory period, to provide additional time for preparing our students. Below is our modified schedule that we will run on from April 9-20.  We will have a separate schedule that we will operate on the week of testing, April 23-27.

Schedule for April 9-20:
1st             7:35-8:30
2nd            8:33-9:23
3rd            9:26-10:16
Advisory   10:19-11:03
Remainder of the Day Normal

Thank you for all of your support!  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns regarding the upcoming testing.

Yours in Education,

Dave Dilbone

Blog replaces TJHS Newsletters

As of Spring 2012, this Blog will replace the TJHS Newsletters that have been sent out for a number of years here at TJHS.  A couple of years ago the seasonal newsletters stopped being sent home to save the cost of printing and postage. This year the newsletters have been available on the front counter for visitors to thumb through.  I wish to continue to communicate with our school community, but it will be via this blog, rather than through the traditional newsletters.  One of the things that I am passionate about is the appropriate use of technology within our school.  We have a committed group of educators who continue to look for new and promising ways to engage our students with an excellent blend of technology, such as Smartboards, iPods, iPads, etc. and more traditional educational tools, such as textbooks and paper/pencil.  As I challenge the staff to find new ways to engage students and to step "out of the box", I realize that I must do the same.  People are social.  They use facebook, tweet, and blog.  As a school, we must find ways to meet them where they are, rather than expecting them to come to us.  With that in mind, I have jumped into the deep waters of Blogger and have made public my Twitter account, @TroyJHPrincipal.  You can also view updates of the happenings at TJHS on our facebook Page.  I look forward to continuing to provide important information to our school community through this blog, twitter, and facebook.  I hope that you find a way to connect that suits your needs!

Yours in education,

Dave Dilbone
